Cons: Does not control the class well. There were always two girls in the class that talked non stop and did not contribute much to the class. This happened everyday and there was a time or two that I did not com to class because I knew that most of it would involve listening to them.
Someone addressed this with her twice and she said that it was annoying, but there was nothing she could have done.
Cons: No cons! Great course. Work hard, and you will do well.
Her grading scaled is different with a 93-100 is an A. You really need to take advantage of handing in rough drafts in order to do well on your paper. She does not require rough drafts, but if you do one, then she really helps you and corrects it. You have to do Response Papers two times a week so you must do the reading.
My only complaint is I would have liked a little more input from her, as opposed to only asking class questions. That being said, she is a great teacher and has a British accent, which makes it nice to listen to her speak. She is pretty strict when it comes to attendance, but is fairly laid back with due dates.
I would definitely take another of her classes.
Cons: She let the classroom discussion veer often and they consumed a lot of time that I would have rather used to acquire knowledge instead of opinions.
Weekly quiz grade, drops 2 of 12
Cons: Expect to know your English! Gaitely is from Britain and expects you to have proper grammar, since you should have already completed eng 1010,1020.Do not be late, you wont be able to take the quiz.
Very nice professor, she is strict on attendance and will call you out in class to give an opinion on the story. There are three papers to write and ten quizes to pass. We read six books over the semester, not too bad for a Lit class. She breaks the stories down during class, so make sure you attend class.
Consistent
Knowledgeable
Lays Expectations out clearly
6 absences, no questions asked...
Cons: Mid-term is essay
Love her class. She encourages participation and it WILL hurt you if you don't participate in class.
3 projects are papers
Cons: books are sometimes hard to understand but she explains what is going on in them in class so you don't even have to read all of them.
-Explains information clearly
-Assignments are fair and do-able.
Cons: -Lots of reading.
Ms. Gaitely is one of my favorite professors at MTSU. I took her my freshman year, Fall 2009, for ENG 1010 and she was wonderful. When I was signing up for ENG 2020 and saw that I had the option to take her, I signed up quick! I cant really complain about anything...she is extremely fair and her assignments are generally easy to do if you pay attention in class and keep up with the reading.
Exams: She gives really good feedback on your essays to help you improve your skills.
Homework: Just the essays
Textbook: Have a book! She gives reading assignments, and bases class discussion from the text. If you read (even half of the assignment) and talk a little in class you'll be fine. She really like class discussion
Exams: Be sure you have done the reading from class and paid attention to the discussions. Her tests come from what you talk about in discussion.
Homework: Reading before class and 3 papers.
Exams: She grades her essays fairly, so if you put a lot of work into them it showed in your grade
Homework: Usually a short reading assignment every night then the next day she will give you questions about what you read
Textbook: Bring it to class everyday
This is what her grading scale is:
A 93-100
B+ 87-92
B 83-86
B- 80-82
C+ 77-79
C 73-76
C- 70-72
Exams: The "tests" consisted of four 1000 word essays. She usually gave you a week and a half to complete the papers. The topics given were: an event/person that changed your life, detailed observation, responding to an article, and an "investigation" paper. For the midterm and final, she gave easy 5-point essays to write.
Homework: Homework usually consisted of reading a short (3-5 page) story. The stories were actually pretty interesting. It is important to do the reading assignment because she often assigned questions over the stories to be done in class the next class period.
Homework: We had assigned pages to read in the textbook. You have to read them because you'll write about what you read in class. Sometimes in groups sometimes alone.
Textbook: You have to buy the textbook. She uses it alot
Exams: Your 5 papers were the test
Homework: just a few pages of reading every night, because the next day we would discuss it in class. The reading was like 4 pages, not bad at all
Exams: The only tests were the mid-term and final which were both in class writing assignments.
Homework: Reading from the book.
Textbook: It is a pretty good book as far as textbooks go. There were very interesting stories.
Exams: She is lenient with the grading and she is always willing to help you with anything you need help with. Rough drafts are assigned and those were what usually made my grade much higher on the final drafts.
Homework: There were only a few homework assignments but they were short and reading was supposed to be required but if we didnt read it was no big deal.
Textbook: We used the textbook often and all we did was read short stories out of them. We then replied with questions or responses at the end.
Exams: Essays were very easy to write! She lets you pick your own sunject to write on!
Homework: Read passages in the textbook
Textbook: Great book! Easy to read and veyr helpful!
Exams: There were really no tests. Papers were considered exams and tests. We did a few grammar quizzes. They were so easy you did not have to study at all for them. The essays were great. They all had to be 3 pages. It was all based on opinion or past experiences. I really enjoyed writing them. The midterm and final was just writing a short essay over a subject she gives you!
Homework: There was quite a bit of homework. Almost every night we had to read a couple of short stories in class. It was not hard at all though! Make sure you take the 10 minutes out of your day to read the couple of stories assigned! She really enjoys it when you participate in class!
Textbook: Well I bought the textbook and the next semester they were not going to use it any more. So I know nothing about the new book. But I'm guessing that her lesson plans don't change so she will just take stories out of the new book!
Exams: Tests were easy...there was like 2 of them. Multiple choice and straight forward. They were grammar tests.
Homework: We had to write a few papers in this class. For the most part, they were interesting and held my attention.
Textbook: We used it, but it was for stuff that discussed and rarely graded. Really, it's up to you. I'd say get it, she might change her policy on grading stuff we read in the textbook. There was one paper where we really needed it though.
Homework: Reading
Textbook: Its okay.
